This enchanting, sophisticatedly wacky pet name was inspired by one of the great icons of literary realism, the famed documentarian of courtly romance among the landed gentry. Meet novelist, storyteller and prickly character—Jane Hawgsten.
Unlike her namesake, there is nothing anonymous about Jane Hawgsten. “When my new baby hedgehog came home, I knew she needed a name that that was going to create a story,” says Nationwide member Jaclyn G. “Being a lover of literature, I thought, ‘Who tells a story better than Jane Austen?’ If my hedgehog is going to tell stories, she needs to become the ‘hawgy’ version of the author—so Jane Hawgsten, she became!”
While the author of “Sense and Sensibility” is best known for her biting critique of social norms, Jane Hawgsten is more of a nibbler. “The wackiest thing about Jane is her love of gently nibbling,” Jaclyn says. “I've had hedgehogs that just bite, but Jane is first one I've had that likes to sit with her teeth gently on my finger while licking me.”
“I protected Jane Hawgsten with Nationwide for the peace of mind,” Jaclyn says. “Knowing that I can focus on her health instead of worrying about bills if anything happens removes one of the major stresses of pet ownership.”
