When it comes to wacky pet naming, the details matter. Sure, you could name your pet after the main character in a cinematic classic—but how about a side dish? Enter, a tiny snake named Gray Stuff.
"In the 'Beauty and the Beast' song ‘Be Our Guest,’ Lumiére sings of decadent French cuisines to serve Belle. “Try the gray stuff, it’s delicious. Don’t believe me ask the dishes!’” says Nationwide member Rebecca T. “It’s canon in the movie for a food that’s never explained what it is, and the food is never mentioned or shown again. My snake Gray Stuff is a gray-banded kingsnake who is gray in color, so I thought it was fitting.”
While the namesake dish never reappears in the classic film, the snake is always on display for guests and family alike. “He never hides!” says Rebecca. “He likes to be at the very front of his enclosure. He also enjoys wrapping his tail around my fingers for extra support when I am holding him.”
Many species of snake can live long, happy lives in their forever homes. “Gray Stuff can live up to 20 years,” Rebecca says. “While I believe that all pets, no matter how short the lifespan, should have insurance protection, I believe that especially for a 20-year lifespan pet.”
