This week, Duke won the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. With undefeated Kentucky a huge favorite, not many experts predicted Duke to win, but VPI did. Before the start of March Madness, VPI released its prediction for the winner based on its pet names data. To determine a favorite, VPI scoured its database of over 525,000 insured pets to find which pet names were the most popular amongst the teams competing in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The results revealed Duke as the most popular school name with 1,556 VPI insured pets sharing the moniker.
This isn’t VPI’s first correct prediction, in fact, this year we’re undefeated. In addition to Duke, VPI monikers have correctly picked the winner of the National College Football Championship and the 2015 Super Bowl.
