How to pick the best female dog name

We know how hard it can be to come up with a name for a new puppy—or even a newly adopted older dog. You want to choose something that fits your dog, is recognizable, but maybe not too popular. You want a name that's cute or silly or tough, depending on your pup's personality. And you'll want your dog's name to be something that lasts the years, growing on you over time.

But how do you get started? Here are some things to think about as you're sifting through popular dog names to choose the right one.

What makes a good name

Only you can define what a "good" name is for your dog (well, maybe your dog will have a say in it too). Other people may have different ideas about what makes a good name for a dog. But here are some common ways that people choose names for their pup:

  • Movies and favorite characters are popular sources of inspiration for female puppy names. Are you a big Disney or Star Wars fan? Maybe you have a fondness for a particular book or TV series. For example, after Game of Thrones became popular, Arya was an incredibly common girl dog name for a while. If you're passionate about a character or think it's a particularly fitting comparison for your dog, this may be the right choice for you.
  • Funny dog names, like puns or naming your dog after food or inanimate objects, can be a great option to show off your sense of humor. Who doesn't love a dog named Taco or Pup Tart?
  • Classic human names can also be a great way to give your dog some personality. You'll notice that many of the most popular and best girl dog names we suggest below follow this formula. Human names can still be cute or silly, especially if you choose a name that's gone out of fashion.

Don't name your new dog this

Now that we've gone through the best ways to name your dog, let's talk about the names you shouldn't choose for your pooch.

  • Names that sound similar to common commands are not ideal because they may confuse your dog. So, you may not want to name your dog "Tay" because it sounds like "stay." Or "Kit" because it sounds like "sit."
  • If your idea for a name has a lot of syllables, you may want to reconsider, unless you have a good nickname in mind. It will be hard for your dog to learn a long name, and you'll get tired of calling your dog by a name that's a mouthful.
  • Avoid names that sound similar to the names of other people in your family. And definitely don't name your dog after your sister or your aunt! This will just cause confusion for your dog (and possibly drama with your sister or aunt).

Keeping your new pup healthy

Before we jump into specific name recommendations, let's talk for a second about caring for your new dog or puppy. We know as a new dog owner, you want to take care of your pet's health in both the short and long term. As you prepare to bring your dog home, consider getting a pet insurance policy to help with the cost of vet visits for illnesses and accidents (as well as wellness visits on some plans).
