Which of the Nation’s Cities Provide the Best TLC?

As omnipresent at dogs may be, the truth is that cats rule the world. Well, at least here in the U.S., they outnumber dogs by more than 10 million.

So, with nearly 89 million cats1 claiming residency in America, which cities are best equipped to give them the love and care they need?

The CATalyst Council, a newly-formed coalition of the veterinary community, academia, nonprofits, and industry and animal welfare organizations, has compiled the first in what they hope will become an annual list of top 10 cat-friendly cities. The council’s hope is to raise the bar for standardized feline care nationwide.

The top 25 standard metropolitan areas were reviewed for criteria including cat ownership demographics, level of veterinary care, microchipping and local cat-friendly laws and regulations.

The Top 10 Cities for American’s No. 1 Pet Companion:

  3. San Francisco, Calif.
  4. Portland, Ore.
  5. Denver, Colo.
  6. Boston, Mass.
  7. Seattle, Wash.
  8. San Diego, Calif.
  9. Atlanta, Ga.
  10. Minneapolis, Minn.

Cats really are America’s number one companion,” said Dan Kramer, senior marketing manager of industry relations for Pfizer Animal Health and chair of the CATalyst Council.

“Our goal is to recognize and celebrate why cats are such popular companions. We applaud the efforts of these major metropolitan areas for providing a wealth of resources for cats and their owners along with their earned accolade of being one of America’s Top 10 Cat-Friendly Cities.”
