Welcome to 2010, a new year for you — and your pets! Just as you may depend on your own horoscope to advise you throughout the year, you may be seeking guidance on behalf of your pets to gain insight into your companions’ well being. .

So, while the ups and downs of global (and financial) events will undoubtedly affect your life, they will also strengthen the bond you share with your pets. This year, your pets will discover their role as a constant companion is an important one. As much as your pet depends on you, you may discover that you, in turn, will rely on your pet for comfort when necessary, and to share new adventures and life changes.

This year may mean a less material world but that doesn’t mean cats, dogs, fish, small and big domestic animals will go without exercise, training, vet visits and love. Use these pet predictions as an outlook into important issues for you and your pets.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 20)

Encourage their eagerness to participate in family events, sample new toys, explore their curiosity and go on new ventures—whether that’s a simple trip outdoors, going for a car ride, or visiting a pet daycare center or a play date with a friend. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 – Feb. 18)

Aquarius pets are known to have an absolutely amazing ability to hold it together in the midst of stressful, demanding times. This month is no different. Pet owners, whatever is going on in your lives, do your best to deflect it away from your Aquarius pets. Make sure you keep your four-legged friends calm; be resourceful and distract them in creative ways: take your dog shopping with you, buy your cat a mind-teasing game that will keep him preoccupied and your whole family will have some peace of mind.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20)

Discipline, consistency and regularity aren’t a Pisces pet’s best traits, but this month enforcing these for your pet will reduce any stress generated from your home environment. Now is the time to stick to routine eating schedules, daily walks or games of tug-of-war, and some one-on-one TLC. Keep your Pisces pets in line—don’t overlook bad behavior or an aggressive attempt to rule the roost. If necessary, take your dog to an obedience class to get him in a working frame of mind.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19)

In March, Aries pets will get the urge to prove their prowess and assert their dominance. Pet owners, curb this behavior by reminding these assertive pets who’s the boss. Take 20 minutes a day to train your Aries dog how to heel while on leash; keep a watchful eye for Aries cats scratching that favorite piece of furniture and stop them in the act with a firm rebuff. Moderation is key; by the end of the month, your pets will be back on track and everyone will benefit from all that is happening.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20)

Your Taurus pet has always been there to support you through thick and thin. This month, put on your best face when you walk through that front door at the end of your work day. These sensitive companions can read you like a book; don’t burden them with any of your personal issues. Keep the positive communication going: be warm and extra supportive to your pet, particularly through the first week of March. Extra belly rubs, more play time and an extra treat before bed time will get your pet through a rough patch.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

Pet owners, you may think your Gemini pets have gone a bit cuckoo this month, due to their peculiar behavior lately. Something unusual is happening, but it’s probably more productive than you think. Give these actively-inclined pets something to do: challenge them with new toys they’re unfamiliar with, ones that will get them thinking and moving. Keep up the daily routines and loving communication; the second half of the month should run smoothly.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

Cancer pets may adopt a fearless attitude this month. It’s spring; Cancer dog owners, take advantage of the warmer weather and challenge your pet’s eagerness to an agility class (elderly dogs may prefer a change of scenery, whether it be a different dog park or the willingness to meet new friends). Cat owners, consider buying a cat tower that encourages your frisky pal to reach new heights. Indulge your Cancer pets this month; they deserve it.

LEO (July 23 – Aug. 23)

You might notice that your Leo pets lack the energy to look after everyone in the house this month. Don’t misinterpret this cranky behavior; needy Leo pets will be lonely if you mistakenly give them a “timeout”.  Don’t overdo the exercise; let your pet get plenty of rest and keep up the amazing ear rubs. You’ll notice an attitude improvement by the second half of the month.

VIRGO (Aug. 24 – Sept. 22)

Always the entertainers, Virgo pets will try to please no matter how they truly feel. Any aches, pains and afflictions felt this month will take a back burner in favor of performing or showing off for you or house guests. Pet owners, take note: many physical ailments your Virgo pets are experiencing can be improved with proper diet, exercise, good grooming and a positive attitude. This may be the perfect month to take your furry companion to the vet for a physical checkup.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 – Oct. 23)

Pet owners may notice their Libra pets’ somewhat goofy behavior in March. Believe it or not, it could be new love… Don’t over analyze the signs, roll with it. With a packed social calendar this month, there are plenty of opportunities for your pets to cozy up with someone special. Keep an eye out for other pets who might try to take advantage of your companion’s submissive attitude.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 – Nov. 22)

Scorpio pets sometimes put on a steely resolve—especially when it comes to protecting their loved ones. This month, frequent visits from guests—some new, some familiar—influences your pet’s tough act. Despite the brave front, expect Scorpio pets to mellow at night, especially at bed time—looking for a little extra comfort. Follow your heart and spoil them excessively.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 – Dec. 21)

Sadge pets are optimistic at heart and are steadfast in picking themselves up when life sometimes gets them down. They also appreciate their creature comforts. A shift in living arrangements can affect your pet’s attitude this month.
