Fourth Annual National Pet Cancer Awareness Month
VPI’s Second Annual K9K a Smashing Success!
With the help of more than 500 pet owners and their accompanying canines, VPI was able to raise more than $12,000 toward pet cancer research at this year’s second annual K9K Walk for Pet Cancer. On a gorgeous fall day in Long Beach, K9K participants and their pets strolled in unison around the Shoreline Village Lighthouse Peninsula, completing a 3-kilometer walk. The K9K is the cornerstone of VPI’s National Pet Cancer Awareness Month.
A mixture of VPI policyholders and southern California pet owners attended the K9K, many celebrating their cancer-surviving pets or walking in honor of past pets who have passed away from the disease. Some of our own employees proudly participated in the walk, and an impressive number donated their time to helping the Corporate Communications team execute the event – close to 30 VPI employees helped make the K9K a success!
Pre-registration monies and all on-site donations went directly to the Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF), which strives to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancers in pets and people. On site to accept the generous donation was the executive director of the ACF, Barbara Cohen.

”Three years ago when VPI first approached us with their concept for Pet Cancer Awareness Month, we never imagined it would grow into an ongoing endeavor that would include an event of this magnitude,“ said Cohen. “We are delighted to be partnering with such a compassionate company to further comparative oncology research that benefits cancer-stricken pets and offers hope of new therapies for people.”
In addition to the proceeds from the K9K, VPI has also helped raise money for pet cancer research with their limited-edition Pet Cancer Awareness dog collars, available for purchase at petinsurance.com. All proceeds from the dog collar sales also go to the ACF.

Show Your Support – Put a Collar on Pet Cancer!
More than 25,000 canine and feline cancer-related claims were filed with VPI in 2007, an increase of nearly 4,000 claims since 2006. Such a growth indicates the importance of routine veterinarian visits to monitor pets for early signs of the disease. This year’s National Pet Cancer Awareness Month is VPI’s fourth campaign since the company launched the initiative in 2005. The educational endeavor has sparked increased cancer awareness and philanthropy among pet owners nationwide.
VPI policyholders and concerned pet owners everywhere are encouraged to contribute donations through the purchase of a VPI limited-edition Pet Cancer Awareness dog collar. These handsome collars, adorned with the Cancer Society’s signature ribbon, will be available in four different sizes. All sales profits go directly to the Animal Cancer Foundation.
