Brown Cactus
Sometimes you choose your pet and sometimes your pet chooses you. Jendy Hammonds of Newsoms, Va., is no stranger to this concept, as her domestic shorthair undoubtedly selected her as an owner at exactly the right moment. “In 2005, we had a house fire,” said Jendy. “Unfortunately, we lost three of our pets that day. We stood out front as the fire department worked to put out the flames, and in the middle of all of this, a little, prickly, perfect cat walked right up to us.”
Jendy’s attempts to locate the cat’s owners were unsuccessful and the stray seemed to be convinced that she had found a new home. When it came time to bestow a name upon her new addition, Jendy saw it fitting to pay homage to the cat they had lost in the fire. “Before our new addition, we had a cat named ‘Moo,’” explained Jendy. “Moo’s nickname was ‘Catacus Brown’ because he was a real cool dude. One day, I heard my roommate talking to someone named ‘Brown Cactus.’” Curious, Jendy went into the other room to see who it was. The mystery guest turned out to be none other than Moo, whom her roommate was mistakenly addressing as “Brown Cactus.”
According to Jendy, the name was perfect for her new “prickly,” brown pet and she’s grateful that Brown Cactus came into her life when she did. “Brown Cactus means so much to my husband and me,” said Jendy. “That’s why we got VPI Pet Insurance; we just couldn’t let anything happen to her.”
