CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 20)

Capricorn pets can behave somewhat nonchalantly this month. You might find yourself trying to decipher the secret language of pets as you notice odd behavior such as unusual nesting, a change in eating habits and an increased desire to simply lounge around. Don't worry: chalk it up to the summertime heat. By the third week of the month, you should recognize your faithful companion again.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 – Feb. 19)

Pet owners may notice their Aquarius pets displaying a bit of anxiety in August. Whether it's cabin fever, the summer heat or a noticeable change of scenario at home, spend quality time with your pet to reduce stress. A calming ear rub, extra attention and a long walk can do wonders for your pet's spirit.

PISCES (Feb. 20 – Mar. 20)

Sensitive, people-oriented Pisces pets may act self indulgent this month. Whether it's hogging the bed, sleeping on your recently folded laundry or taking over the role of couch potato and incessantly begging for table scraps, don't give in too much. A bit of laziness is okay, but beware: pet obesity and a lack of exercise can threaten your pet's health.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 20)

Camera, lights, action! Aries pets revel in their typical extraverted fashion in August. Summertime activities and a variety of household guests keep your pet in the spotlight. Always entertaining, Aries pets will delight in showing off favorite tricks and guarding the homefront. Rosie O'Donnell and Aretha Franklin, both Aries themselves, could learn a thing or two from your four-legged companion.

TAURUS (Apr. 21 – May 21)

Taurus pets are loyal and generous with their affection. Watch out for a mood swing in August! A bout of possessiveness over toys or easy-to-reach objects may occur mid-month. Take it in stride: a quick training lesson will benefit you and your pet and mentally fatigue a stubborn critter.

GEMINI (May 22 – June 21)

Always intelligent and curious, Gemini pets are quick developers. August brings a renewed sense of eagerness to your companion. Take advantage of this and consider a weekend getaway with your pet. Whether you're city bound or want to hit the trails or shoreline, plan an adventure for the whole family. Remember, even pets get cabin fever!

CANCER (June 22 – July 23)

Despite their sometimes shy nature, family-oriented Cancer pets are always in tune with you and other family members. Changes at home around the 18th can make for a very prickly companion. Keep your Cancer pet's mood swings to a minimum by setting aside some one-on-one time that will benefit both you and your pet.

LEO (July 24 – Aug. 23)

Happy birthday to Leo pets! With their streak of independence, Leo pets will try to outwit you this month in an attempt to move up the chain of command at home. Remind your rambunctious pet who's really the alpha in the pack. A regular training session will keep your furry companion in line.

VIRGO (Aug. 24 – Sept. 23)

Some Virgo pets also celebrate a birthday in August! Whether or not you're pulling out paper party hats and pet-friendly treats for your companion's special day, this month is bound to be a busy one. With summer coming to an end, activities are on the rise and your analytical Virgo pet knows it. Don't exclude your Virgo pet from activities, but make sure to take safe measures when heading outdoors.

LIBRA (Sept. 24 – Oct. 23)

Before the end of August, your Libra pet may develop a change in routine, find a new place to rest, and display a higher sensitivity to guarding the home front. Whatever the case, don't be surprised if your pet needs a little more TLC than normal. You can keep your easy-going Libra pet happy with some well-balanced attention and everyone will sleep soundly at night.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 – Nov. 22)

August is a lazy month for the usually dominant Scorpio pet. Laguid days resting in sunny spots make for a rather mellow pet. Don't let your pet lounge too much; an overweight pet can lead to other health problems. If possible, get outdoors with your pet and exercise together (bring plenty of water). Not only will both of you keep in shape, but you're pet will become motivated and enjoy the alone time with you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 – Dec. 21)

Free-spirited Sagittarious pets may show their impulsive side this month. Their sometimes funny antics (such as crazy 8's around the house and rapid tail spins) can turn into bad behavior toward the end of August if you don't set some standards. Keep their socialization to a normal level when guests are visiting. Sag pets can get into a frenzy when overly excited.
