Is In-House Veterinary Expertise Important?

Dennis' DiaryI have mentioned in other posts that we are named “Veterinary” Pet Insurance for good reason.

First, we were started by a group of more than 700 veterinarians.

Currently, we have 11 veterinarians and more than 60 veterinary technicians working for the company. It is important to VPI to hire and maintain a workforce with such strong knowledge of veterinary medicine because it allows us to design effective products, accurately process claims and provide sufficient support to veterinary clinics.

I’ve asked our Chief Veterinary Medical Officer, Dr. Carol McConnell, to explain further why VPI hires so many veterinary staff.

Benefits of Veterinary Staff

VPI’s veterinarians and veterinary technicians use their clinical knowledge to tailor our insurance products to meet the needs of pet owners who regularly seek veterinary care. When pet owners apply for an insurance policy, our veterinary expertise becomes even more important for underwriting policies, conducting enrollment interviews for pets with complex medical histories and interpreting medical records to provide our policyholders with the best possible coverage.

As the nation’s oldest and largest pet health insurance provider, we will process nearly 1 million claims in 2008. Each of these claims includes a medical diagnosis, which can range from an ear infection to cancer and everything in between. Our claims processors must possess a high level of veterinary knowledge to adequately handle these claims and ensure they are paid promptly and accurately.

“The successful operation of a pet insurance company depends upon knowledgeable in-house veterinarians and veterinary technicians.”

Helping Educate Veterinary Hospital Staff

Dennis with Willie and Charlie Occasionally, your veterinarian or veterinary hospital staff member may need assistance in understanding an aspect of our policy, from reimbursement practices to coding of complex medical conditions. When these situations arrive, veterinary professionals have the ability to call our dedicated Veterinary Services team, all of whom are veterinary technicians and experts in VPI’s policies.

The successful operation of a pet insurance company depends upon knowledgeable in-house veterinarians and veterinary technicians. With such a staff, we are able to create products that support the way veterinary medicine is practiced.

We want to ensure that your insurance policy incorporates easily into your relationship with your veterinarian. It’s no secret that our business model prioritizes a strong bond with the veterinary community. This is the way we’ve done business for the last 26 years and it’s the way we will continue to be the trusted choice of America’s pet lovers.
