A Pet Cancer Survivor’s “Tail"

The Unthinkable

I enrolled my cocker spaniel, Jasper, in a VPI Pet Insurance policy on my veterinarian’s recommendation. Initially, I got it for vaccinations and other routine procedures, but I never would have expected to use it to treat cancer.

The first indication that anything was wrong with Jasper came at the groomer’s. It was a Saturday, and when I picked Jasper up, the groomer said that she noticed his lymph nodes were swollen. I felt them myself, and sure enough, they felt like two golf balls.

I took Jasper to the vet the following Monday, and he said he thought the problem might be with Jasper’s teeth. But I had an uneasy feeling about the situation, so I asked, “Can we rule out cancer?”

A Waiting Game

The vet told me that cancer was probably unlikely, given that Jasper was only three years old, but that they couldn’t rule it out without a biopsy. Since Jasper was going to be out for a dental cleaning, I had them do a biopsy.

Several days later, my veterinarian called and told me that it was a good idea I had the biopsy done. Turns out Jasper had lymphoma.

Second Chances

The next day, I took Jasper to an oncologist and got him started on a round of chemo-therapy. Since we caught it early, the oncologist thinks we have a good  chance. Jasper is going into remission, and the chemo hasn’t seemed to have any negative effects, but he’s still got to go through his course.

VPI has been a great help throughout Jasper’s treatment. One of the first things I did after finding out he had cancer was call in to see what kind of options I had and what would be covered.  Everyone there was so kind and sympathetic.

Thank Goodness for VPI

People ask me, “Isn’t it expensive getting chemo-therapy for your dog?” I tell them that it is, but I  have insurance to help. They’re amazed that I have insurance, and that it’s actually paying. Jasper’s first treatment was about $690, and VPI paid $340. His second treatment was about $930, and VPI paid $620.

I really appreciate the assistance with Jasper’s veterinary expenses. I’m a single mom raising two kids, and I know this is going to be costly. But since Jasper is so young, I had to give him a shot. He doesn’t even know he’s a dog, he’s so spoiled. He sleeps with me. He thinks he’s one of the kids and sometimes he’s better behaved! I couldn’t imagine not seeking the best treatment possible for him, and I couldn’t imagine not having VPI.
